Ways of Getting Into Fashion Design

The world of fashion screams glamour and has always been a world in which many young people want to develop a career. That unfortunately means that sheer talent may not always be enough on its own, and that every forward step is going to involve using a wide range of tactics as well as beating off some serious competition.

If you really want to progress, then you’re almost certainly going to have to do more than you would in a normal job – a good interview, working a few extra hours and sucking up to the boss won’t cut it in the world of fashion!

Breaking into the fashion industryBreaking into the fashion industry

Here are a few ideas that are well worth trying if you want to improve your chances of breaking into this most competitive of career choices:

Study fashion at college or university

Being able to create fashions that people like is one thing; being able to carve a career out of that talent is a different matter altogether. Taking a course at college or university will teach you more than how to design nice clothes. You’re also likely to study the history of fashion, computer-aided design, marketing skills – all of which should help you apply your skills to the real world.

Be prepared to take less now in the hope for gains later

If you’re able, getting an internship is perhaps the best thing you can do to get your foot in the door. That way, you’re not only learning on the job, you’re also in a position to feed off the knowledge and experience of those already in the business. Apprenticeships are another way of finding a way into fashion if you’re unable to make the long-term financial commitment involved in higher education, with the added bonus of being paid as you learn.

Create your own brand via social media

If you’ve got social media skills alongside your talent for fashion, put the two together and use your platform of choice to get your work out there and develop your brand. Networking is a key tactic in the fashion world, so be sure to engage online with people who might be able to help you – make yourself visible by following all their profiles and commenting on their posts and pages.

Build up a portfolio

Keep your best stuff together and make sure it’s always accessible, because you never know when you’re going to bump into the person who might change your life. And don’t get complacent about what’s in it – tastes and fashions move quickly, and what you’re proud to show off one day may no longer be something you want others to see a few weeks later. Make regular reviews of what’s in your portfolio and be ruthless about removing bits of it if necessary.

Stay on top of developments

Knowing what’s happening now – and, even better, what’s likely to be happening in the future – is key to success in the world of fashion. Things move quickly, so being one step ahead of the game is absolutely vital. Follow all the movers and shakers in the business on your favourite social media sites and subscribe to any industry journals and magazines so that you’ll have all the latest news and gossip at your fingertips.
