Benefits of Using a B2B Wholesaler

If you’re running a retail business and need to source items to sell, or even items to help you sell such as display shelving, retail packaging and pricing guns and labels, you need to find someone to sell them to you. That could be a wholesaler or you could just go to another store and buy the goods there.

In this article, we will examine the differences between using wholesale and retail, and why using a B2B wholesaler is always the best choice.

What is wholesale?

A wholesaler supplies retailers with goods for resale. This could be either their own manufactured items, or goods they have bought in bulk from usually multiple other manufacturers. If it’s the latter, they will be dealing with much larger quantities than a retailer usually would, so will be able to both buy and sell at lower prices because they will have bought them at an advantageous rate.

Generally this will be on a business-to-business (B2B) model, which is why wholesalers usually advertise their prices without VAT – most of their customers will be VAT-registered and don’t need to pay it.

What is retail?

Retailers sell direct to the public. This may be a case of someone opening a shop to sell their own products or somewhere that sources goods from multiple manufacturers to sell on, like a grocery store. In the case of the latter, those goods will usually be sourced from a wholesaler; to make a profit, the retailer will naturally have to sell the goods at a higher price than they paid the wholesaler.

Although they are retailers, big supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s don’t need to use a wholesaler. Because they are so large and need items in huge quantities, they can source their goods directly from the manufacturers themselves at the same – or even more – discounted price that a wholesaler would get.

The Benefits of using a B2B Wholesaler

Buying from a wholesaler allows you to access a wider range of goods from a single source, making it quicker and cheaper than if you’re buying from a retailer. Whether you’re buying from the manufacturers themselves or someone acting as a go-between or middleman, you’ll always get better value than you would buying from another retailer.

Another of the benefits of using wholesalers is that you might be able to negotiate an even better price if you’re making regular large orders. If you’re dealing with the manufacturer, you might also be able to agree favourable sale-or-return terms that you wouldn’t get from another retailer. Of course, this would not be applicable in the case of items that quickly deteriorate, such as fresh food, but many manufacturers will accept such returns if they are sent back in perfect condition for resale.
