London GTS turns 130!

Our London store turns 130

Our London site represents a significant part of Morplan’s 179 years’ history, having been a part of the evolving London retail and fashion scene since 1894.

We've been around a long time, beginning in 1845 as a printworks company in the Camberwell area of Southeast London with the company's founder, Mr Morrish, working in his print workshop in Union Row Cottages. Although our records from that period are scarce, following this we can see the company beginning to grow before moving to the Great Titchfield Street site in 1894 and opening as Morrish & Chalfont.

The store began its' life primarily focusing on stationery and printing. Offering wholesale and retail services for stationers, steam printers, paper bag and account book manufacturers. Featured over 4 floors, Morrish & Co originally occupied the right-hand side of the building, serving the local area with their products and services.

Move forward 60 years and the building is now occupied by the brand we know today, Morplan. Over these years the garment industry continued to expand in the area and as a thriving fashion district grew around Great Titchfield Street, so did our fashion design product range, something for which we are still well renowned for to this day.

Proceed to the 1970’s and Morplan expanded into the shop next door, working from 2 floors in the building the team at the time were focused on the garment trade and office and commercial stationary supplies. In the last decade Morplan have since acquired the top half of next door and expanded our range covering all 4 floors across both buildings.

The history of Great Titchfield Street can be dated back to the 18th century, being developed by the Dukes of Portland, who at the time owned most of the eastern half of Marylebone.

As with naming conventions of that time, streets and areas of London were named after significant landowners, Great Titchfield Street lending its name from The Marquessate of Titchfield, a subsidiary title of the Dukedom of Portland.

More recently, the arrival of media organisations, TV pre and postproduction companies and highly specialised boutiques now symbolise the local area with the famous BT tower overlooking Great Titchfield Street. However, there are still many fashion retailers occupying local stores which our Morplan London store are always on hand to help and supply.

130 years celebration in the store

Morplan are celebrating the last 130 years at Great Titchfield Street by creating a beautiful mannequin display in the stores’ front window.

The mannequins show the timeline of our store and how it intertwines with London’s history:

The month-long celebration will end with an in-store event where customers are invited on site to help us properly commemorate the occasion.

Discover our regional stores
